WinSite Startup Section:The Basic Information You Need to Understand and Use VBRUNXXX Files

This should help if you are wondering what VBRUNxxx.DLL is, if you need it, how to get it, or what to do with it.

VBRUN means Visual Basic Runtime. A runtime program does not do anything by itself, but supports other programs. The files VBRUN100.DLL, VBRUN200.DLL, and VBRUN300.DLL are 'runtime' Dynamic Link Library 'programs' that support programs written in Visual Basic 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0, respectively.

Many ShareWare and FreeWare programs are written in VB, and require the correct DLL for support. Those programs requiring one of these should indicate it in the programs description or their installation instructions. Check the instructions, you may find the program will indicate the required VBRUNxxx.DLL is included, and it will install it if required.

If the instructions indicate you need the VBRUNxxx.DLL, there is a chance you may already have it on your disks. You can search your disk(s) for the programs using the Windows File Manager, selecting from its menu, File/Search..., and enter:

  • Search For: VBRUN*.*
  • Starting From: C:\ (or each of your disk letters, one at a time) make sure the Search All SubDirectories box is checked.

If you already have the required programs , then you will not need to download them again. Make sure the VBRUNxxx.DLL files are located in your C:\Windows\System sub-directory. If not, you should move them to that sub-directory

If you do not already have the required VBRUNxxx.DLL, you can locate and download the programs from:

Choose the one you need or get them all now(you will find them necessary at some point).

What you download will be a compressed "ZIP" file that must be unzipped to access the DLL file. (For information on extracting zip files click HERE.)

For example, if you download VBRUN300, the file downloaded will be VBRUN300.ZIP,and it can be found under whatever name you specified prior to downloading.I prefer saving my .zip files on a floppy and then un-zipping them to the directory of my choice, then I always have a compressed back-up copy on disk.

You MUST move the DLL file to your C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM sub-directory(specify this directory to un-zip to) so the ShareWare programs (and Windows) can find it when they need it. Please note it is the VBRUNxxx.DLL file that must be moved, NOT the VBRUNxxx.ZIP, (this is a common mistake).Once you have moved the DLL file, you can copy the ZIP file to diskette, then delete it and the sub-directory from your download directory.

You only need to 'install' each VBRUNxxx.DLL file ONCE, and only the ones required as needed. You do not need to do it each time you download a ShareWare program requiring it.
