What is DeviceExpert ?DeviceExpert is a web-based, multi vendor network configuration, change and compliance management (NCCCM) solution for switches, routers, firewalls and other network devices. A trusted solution used by thousands of network administrators around the world, DeviceExpert helps administrators to take total control of the entire life cycle of device configuration management.Features offered by DeviceExpert are classified into the following categories:Configuration ManagementMutli-vendor Device Configuration Support :Modern IT enterprises make use of network devices from diverse hardware vendors for different purposes. This makes the network quite complex and also complicates configuration management process. The network administrators have to spend a lot of time to manage the configuration of the devices. A unified network configuration management solution is needed to simplify administrators' job.DeviceExpert provides an integrated solution for complete change and configuration management for devices from multiple hardware vendors. At present, DeviceExpert supports device models from the following vendors: * Cisco * HP * Nortel * Force10 * D-Link * Juniper * NetScreen * Juniper * NETGEAR * Dell * 3Com * Foundry * Fortinet * ADTRAN * Enterasys * Huawei * Extreme * Proxim * Aruba * Blue Coat * ALAXALA * H3C * Yamaha * DAX * Vanguard * Allied TelesisConfigurations of devices such as switches, routers, firewalls and others from the above vendors could be retrieved from the devices, viewed, edited and uploaded to the device from a single, central web GUI.Device Discovery :Discovery, Device Groups & InventoryDevice configuration management starts with addition of your devices to the inventory. Enterprises have hundreds of devices and it would be a laborious task to add devices manually one-by-one. DeviceExpert provides discovery option to add SNMP-enabled devices in bulk in a single click. Other devices can be manually added or could be imported in bulk from a flat file.DeviceExpert establishes communication with the devices via SSH / Telnet / SNMP. The configuration files are transferred from and to DeviceExpert using TFTP. It helps create a device inventory with all device details, hardware properties besides enabling you to view, label, edit and upload device configuration from a single, centralized web GUI. The inventory would be a powerful tool at the hands of the administrator allowing him to gather vital information of the devices being managed. Administrators gain visibility into the network and devices. The devices in the inventory can be grouped based on any logical criteria - for example 'Cisco Router Group' containing all Cisco routers. Configuration operations such as backing up configuration, uploading configurations to devices and others can be performed on all devices of the group at one go. Informative Inventory :The list of devices added to DeviceExpert are presented in the form of an informative inventory in the GUI. In a single shot, you can view serial numbers, interface details, chassis details, port configurations, IP Addresses and hardware properties of the devices. This would prove to be a powerful tool at the hands of the administrators enabling them to gain visibility into the network devices. Encrypted Storage of Configuration & Centralized Control :Device Configurations are sensitive data and if a malicious user gets hold of a device password, he could wreak havoc to the entire network. DeviceExpert stores device configurations in encrypted form in the MySQL database bundled with the product making the process very secure. Besides, there is also provision for SSH communication between DeviceExpert and devices.DeviceExpert serves as a secure, centralized repository for device configurations. Administrators get access to configurations based on their roles and access restrictions. DeviceExpert retrieves configurations from devices whenever there occurs a configuration change. Configurations are versioned and stored in the database making configuration management easier.Configuration Versioning & Comparison : While working with configurations of devices, network administrators face the need for comparing any two versions of configurations. In multi-vendor environment, administrators often wish to compare the configurations of devices from two vendors for reference purpose. DeviceExpert satisfies this need by providing the option to compare any two configuration versions of same device or different devices. The configuration difference is depicted side-by-side showing the changed lines in blue, added lines in green and deleted lines in red. Configurations are versioned and stored in the database and the DeviceExpert GUI provides option to select and view any particular configuration version. From the historical information, administrators can choose any to configuration versions and compare.Baseline Configuration :Whenever there happens a configuration change in a device, DeviceExpert automatically triggers a configuration backup. The backedup configurations are stored as incremental versions. Among the various configuration versions of a device, any trusted version can be lebeled as 'Baseline Version'.Baseline version can be considered as the best working configuration version. It will enable administrators to rollback configurations to the baseline version in the event of a network outage.Scheduling Configuration Backup & Other Tasks :In enterprises with large number of devices, administrators find it difficult to manually carry out operations such as configuration backup, upload etc. They also wish to perform certain operations at regular intervals. DeviceExpert provides ways to automatically execute these tasks. The tasks can be scheduled for execution at the required time automatically.Tasks such as 1. Configuration Backup2. Report Generation3. Custom Templates4. Compliance Checkfor a specific device or group of devices could be scheduled for execution at periodic intervals or for an one-time execution. The schedule can be created for a particular device or for a group of devices.Role-based Access Control :DeviceExpert deals with the sensitive configuration files of devices and in a multi-member work environment, it becomes necessary to restrict access to sensitive information. Fine-grained access restrictions are critical for the secure usage of the product. DeviceExpert provides role-based access control to achieve this.DeviceExpert comes with three pre-defined access levels:Access Level (Role) DefinitionAdministrator With all privileges to access, edit and push configuration of all devices. Only administrator can add devices to the inventory, add users, assign roles and assign devices. In addition, administrator can approve or reject requests pertaining to configuration upload (pushing configuration) by operators.Power User With privileges to access, edit and push configuration of specified devices. Can approve or reject requests pertaining to configuration upload (pushing configuration) by operators.Operator With privileges to access and edit configuration of specified devices. Can send requests for configuration upload (pushing configuration) to Administrators/Power Users. By assigning proper roles and allotting devices, administrators can restrict access to device configurations among the users in the organization.Approval Mechanism for Configuration Upload :Uploading configuration changes to devices is an important task and requires due care and in-depth knowledge of configuration syntax. Faulty configuration changes could leave security holes. Hence, the security policy of many enterprises require certain types of changes carried out by certain levels of users to be reserved for review and approval by top administrators prior to the deployment of the changes.DeviceExpert comes with three pre-defined access levels: * Administrator * Power User * OperatorThe users with the role administrator will have all privileges to access, edit and push configuration of all devices. 'Power Users' will have privileges to access, edit and push configuration of specified devices. Users with the role 'Operator' will not be allowed to push configuration changes to devices. If they want to modify the configuration, they can send requests for configuration upload (pushing configuration) to administrators, who will verify the changes and approve/reject the request. Remote Firmware Upgrade / OS Images Transfer :Firmware Upgrade & OS Images TransferUpgrading firmware, uploading/downloading of OS images are among the commonest operations performed by the administrators. DeviceExpert helps automate these tasks through the use of advanced script execution feature. Advanced script execution helps in executing a series of inter-connected commands on a device in command line. Apart from firmware upgrade, advanced scripts help in automating tasks such as configuring banner messages, resetting the passwords of devices etc.,All these tasks can be performed on demand or can be scheduled for execution automatically at any future point of time. All that you need to do is to create a small template containing the required commands and then execute the template for carrying out repetitive tasks for many devices, many times.Change ManagementReal-time Configuration Change Tracking * Unauthorized configuration changes often wreak havoc to the business continuity and hence detecting changes is a crucial task.
